On December 12, 1531, a youthful indigenous Native indian by the identify of Juan Diego was walking towards the Hill of Tepeyac.  He was stopped by the appearance of the Virgin Mary.  The Virgin Mary appeared to Juan Diego as a young girl with dark hair and dark skin, a lot like an indigenous person.  The Virgin Mary ordered Juan Diego to go to the Bishop and ask him to construct a church on the Hill of Tepeyac.  When Juan Diego ran to the Bishop to inform him what the Virgin Mary had told him, the Bishop did not imagine which this young man was telling him and disregarded the request.

Again, the Virgin Mary appeared in front of Juan Diego.  She informed him to collect flowers from the top of the hill.  But it was December and Juan Diego recognized that there were not going to be any flowers on the rocky hill.  Nevertheless, Juan Diego was surprised to see that it was coated with vibrant and attractive a flower bouquet when he achieved the top of the hill.  As he was requested to, Juan Diego collected the flowers using his overcoat and ran to see the Bishop.

When Juan Diego gave the coat full of flowers to the Bishop the Bishop discovered the image of Virgin Mary´s picture was traced on the coat.  Upon observing both the unseasonal flowers and the image of the Virgin, the Bishop realized Juan Diego had told him the fact and The Basilica of the Virgin of Guadalupe was developed on the hill of Tepeyac in Mexico City

La Guadalupana has been an inspiration to believers, as stated Diego Rivera: “I’m an atheist but Guadalupana”.
