Scottsdale Golf Courses

I’m a regular player at several Scottsdale golf courses, but no matter the course I’m always an observer (and sometimes, even a participant) of a familiar routine: Swearing, stomping, throwing golf clubs and ranting about the impossibility of making that golf ball go high, straight and long. So if you don’t have the money for continuous golf lessons, here are three hints from the pros about how to improve your golf game.

First, develop a pre-shot routine. One of the biggest reasons for hitting shots is bad alignment, and a pre-shot routine will establish good alignment and proper ball position. Stand with your feet together behind the ball, and set your club face down so it is facing an intermediate target. Then, as you look at your real target, take a small step with your left foot and slightly larger step with your right foot. This guarantees the ball is in the proper position in the left half of your stance, between the left heel and the center. The second tip is to spend more time putting, and not all of your time hitting balls at the range. It’s much easier to quickly improve your putt than it is your drive.  We can’t become Tiger Woods overnight, but we can get on his putting level.

The third tip is to practice with a purpose. Many players go to the range to hit balls, but they don’t really pay attention to what they’re doing. A good sample plan is to warm up for 10-15 minutes and don’t just use one club. Next, spend 10-15 minutes working on a specific position or movement that you need to improve.  Finish up by working on your short game for 20-30 minutes.  Keep all of these tips in mind to slowly and steadily find happiness on the course, not frustration.
